In preparation for Fresher’s Week, we met online via Discord with seven in attendance. We began with the Anidle, as is tradition.
First order of business was sorting out exec roles, as our Welfare Milo was stepping down from the role. We wish him all the best. Therefore, an election needs to be held within ten university weeks. We left that for the termly meeting to sort out. Furthermore, our Treasurer Harry will be at a different university for the year, though is able to continue his duties and will make an effort to be around for karaokes.
Until the by-election, Henry will serve as interim Welfare Officer.
As memberships expired in the new year, a reminder was issued for exec to prioritise renewing theirs.
Then we moved on to our Fresher’s Week movie pitches:
- Eliminated round 1: 100m, Words Bubble Up Like Soda Pop
- Round 2: Perfect Blue
- Round 3: Akira, Patema Inverted
The winner was Ghost in the Shell.
[Prior to Welcome Week, a 4K screening of Ghost in the Shell was announced, so after a revote between Akira and Patema Inverted, Akira was chosen as the new showing.]
We decided on September 24th as the date for our next meeting to decide termly events and main series.
As for Fresher’s Week:
- We talked logistics, specifically for the Societies Fair, which overlaps with the movie showing. A timetable was put together. We wanted some kind of interactive element (TBD) and decorations (figures and manga we already own). Posters are desired.
- The quiz was sorted out. Rounds were divided up between exec. Rounds will have to be kept efficient, as we won’t have as much time as we’d like. Quizzes should be mostly done by next meeting.
- For games night, we have the society’s BAKA! and games brought by exec.
- For marketing, we decided to steal Vocaloid Society’s poster hunt from last year, as it seemed to work for them. We want to use it to emphasise more of the social aspect of the society. We need to start more Instagram activity too.
Another Societies Fair will take place in October. We decided it wasn’t worth attending.
A small point brought up was the idea of giving karaoke song mappers an extra pick, to reward the effort. We were all in favour.
With MCM London approaching in mid-October, we made the decision to go as a society, with care to be taken to let people know our plans and the potential costs. We will go on Saturday, in lieu of a regular event.
Oli and Jake offered to camp the room booking site in preparation for when they open up. Particular targets were MS.02 for showings, an upstairs Zeeman room for pre-showings, and karaoke rooms.
Collaborations for the new year were discussed. A Week 9 Vocaloid Society event going ice skating in Coventry was confirmed, the prospect of a Go Society event on a Wednesday was again raised, and a Philosophy Society collaboration for a Wednesday was also mentioned, in the midst of being organised.
The final point was to put together a Discord announcement to make people aware of our Fresher’s Week events and plans for MCM London, as well as reminding people to renew their memberships.
